David Carr has died.

It's been a rough week for journalism. Brian Williams took his six months, Jon Stewart stepped down, and now David Carr, resident media critic for the New York Times, has passed away. Although Carr is of lesser fame than the former two, he arguably held one of the more important roles in the media machine: critic of the machine itself. His straightforward approach and unique insights will be sorely missed. I particularly enjoyed his candid commentary in the 2011 documentary Page One: Inside the New York Times which offered an inside look at the company's transition into the new media age, and come to think of it is highly relevant to topics we cover in this class.

NYT coverage of his death is below, as well as a more personal response piece by Ezra Klein of Vox.
